The key to a great master’s thesis isn’t what you might think. Too many students get anxious and worked up with stress about such a big project, but with the right combination of dedication and outside help, you can plan and conduct a strong thesis, too. There are actually many keys to good thesis writing, not just one big secret that everybody but you knows. Once you know some of the tips you can use for a great outline for a thesis, your planning will pay off when you start to write the first draft. Consider making an outline and planning the duration of your time left before the deadline, even if you aren’t much of an organizing person.
Plan an Outline for a Thesis
What you need to do now is analyze exactly where you are in your work. Have you already done half the thesis and research, and gotten stuck? Are you just starting but worried your work wont’ be any good? Are you nearly the end and realizing that your thesis has no substance to it, no greatness? Any and all of these problems can be addressed with a strong outline. Even if you’ve already gotten some, or most, or all of your thesis written, having a plan makes a huge positive difference.
What you need to do to make a great outline:
- Start with what you already have. If you’re just starting, skip to step #2. Analyze the stuff you’ve already written and see what’s working and what isn’t. keep the stuff that you think is good, and toss the stuff you think isn’t – unless you can plan on how you’ll rewrite it. Now look at what’s left and make some notes to summarize what the rest of your thesis will be like.
- Once that’s done, or if you have no previous material, you need to write a bare bones structure of what you want your thesis to be. Read other people’s published theses for ideas or talk with your advisor during this time. You need a couple sentences of notes and summary for each planned chapter.
- Now you can get to writing. Using this outline is easy because you’re already intimately familiar with the work by now. Do more research, if needed, and stick it into the relevant chapters as you go. All that’s left is to fill in the places between your summaries and research.
